What types of applications was the computer language ALGOL used for?

Well, ALGOL was used in the 60's and not since the 70's. Except of some freaks no one would use it today.

ALGOL was used for mathematics, numeric processing; was good for solving complex equations that included arrays, tables. Very cryptic, but powerful for the time.
