Thank you for looking. I have a couple questions on becoming a lawyer. I currently only have my g.e.d. what would be the best route to take if I want to become a lawyer? I am currently in community college majoring in business, should I change my major to pre-law? Are there any good law schools here in C.A.? Are there any law schools that will accept an online degree? Please post your comments, all are appreciated. Thank you

If you want to be a good lawyer, after community college transfer to an acclaimed university. And, you have to take the LSAT, which is an entry exam for law school, and not an easy test. Then you go to law school, pass the bar exam, find a good job with a law firm, and off you go.

Dear Roger,
You can do anything you want. Decide on what type of lawyer you would like to be. Loyal Law School, USC, UCLA they are a lot of law schools. I think being a paralegal will help you too. Get you some internship in an attorney's office. Online law school probably but make sure any school is accreditable and you will be able to transfer your credits from one school to another. You can check the internet, yellow page, Los Angeles Public library downtown (best library and they have a law section) etc. for law school. The State Bar Assoc. will help you too. Make sure you have questions written down before you inquire about the lawyer you decide to be. Corp Law is good and less stressful--But you know the rest.

There are two types of law schools in California, those that are accredited by the ABA and those that are accredited only by the state of California. There is a wide gulf between the bar passage rates of graduates from ABA accredited schools and the unaccredited schools. The advice you have gotten to transfer to a U.C. or Cal State school, get good grades and get into an accredited law school is all you need to know. It does not matter whether you major in business, economics, chemistry or poli sci, just get good grades and transfer to a good four year school. Lots of people in California take advantage of their local community college for the first two years because the cost is so reasonable.
If you do well in college and on the LSAT, you stand a good chance of getting into an accredited law school. Good luck.

Despite what some of the posters say, the law is an honorable profession and can be practiced in an honorable fashion.

You need a college degree to go to law school. There are a wide variety of law schools in California, some ABA accredited, some not. In California, you don't have to go to an ABA accredited law school to take the bar. However, the better your education, the better opportunities will be available to you. Learn to read and write well. Learn to think critically. This will help you in any law school.

And remember, ultimately, you will not be asked by any court or your clients where you went to school. You'll be asked what you know and what you can do to help them.

Good luck in your efforts.

You don't need to have any specific degree to go to law school, but you do need a BA or a BS first. Community college is a good start, but you'll want to switch to a local 4-year college as soon as your grades are good enough. It also would be helpful to take writing-intensive classes, and if you can't afford LSAT prep classes you might want to look into a basic logic class (offered either by the philosophy or math department). Make sure that you work closely with at least two professors, because you'll need good letters of recommendation to get into law school.

There are many good law schools in California. Take a look at ILRG to get an idea of what grades and LSAT scores you'll need for specific schools (link below), and then take a look at the LSAC web site for a good overview of the entire application process. Good luck!
