ALL NEW CARS SAY THEY ONLY TAKE PREMIUM GAS. I think it's some agreement between manufacturers and oil companies.
You can put regular (87 octane) in. The only reason to put higher octane gas in is for custom tuned higher compression engines to prevent preignition. You don't have to worry really. Using regular gas is not going to hurt your engine to any measurable degree, especially in a car with <100000 miles.
That being said, if you fuel up with 87 octane gas, you may notice a slightly different sound. This usually goes away as the car's computer adjusts. If you hear a distinct knocking then you are getting preignition and you should use a higher octane.

If you put in cheaper gas you might get a engine knock. Over time this can damage the engine. What I mean Engine knock it is when the the air fuel mixture pre-detonates, which is the engine is firing before it is suppose to. It's firing before the piston reaches the top of it's stroke on the compression stroke. The difference between the octanes is: octane mean The resistance to burn. So the higher the octane the more resistance it is to burn. I hope this helps you out on making your decision. If I was you I would stay with premium gas. I know it cost more but in the long run it will be cheaper.

The car's compression ratio is to high to run off gas that's not premium. The engines timing is adjusted for the higher compression. Using less concentrated gas may cause the engine to ping or knock, or it may make loud popping sound. The repeated use would probably slowly change the engine timing and may result in a poor running engine in the future.

If you are asking what damage could occur to your engine if you use regular instead of premium, the answer is: none. Modern vehicles, with their computerized engine/fuel management systems, compensate for the change in octane by automatically adjusting the spark timing and other factors. If you use regular in a car recommended for premium, the performance, mileage and maybe driveability may decrease, but you will not harm the engine by doing so. Really!

You should use premium if your car has a turbo. Premium fuel is for higher compression ratio or turbo-charged engines You can put non-premium
in a turbo eclipse but your performance will suffer and your mileage will probably drop.

I know that any car I ever had from older cars to a Infiniti J30 when I put in lower octane gas. It pinged and knocked like crazy. Deffinitly not good for the engine. For the money you save its not worth damage to the motor

Cheap gas save you a bit of money now but will cost you a lot of money in the future if the engine is blowed up.

It will run perfectly fine. Going from 87 to 93 octane will have NO effect on your engine as in damage. Your eclipse will run just fine on regular unleaded.

it depends on the eclipse.... older turbo models will slowly die, the newer v6 engines will perform poorly, if u r a tuner chances are you have added upgrades such as intake exhaust and other things thus improving horsepower, thus requiring higher octane gas

gasoline has an octane rating. premium has a higher octane than regular. octane helps prevent the fuel from detonating (exploding). if fuel were to detonate in the engine... that means stuff is gonna get blown up. you want fuel to "burn," not "detonate." dont EVER put "cheap" fuel in your gas tank. unless you want a blown up engine. ;)
