It originated from the Indian word "Ayhuwa", meaning "sleepy ones". This was a name the Dakota Sioux used in jest for the Ioway, their linguistic kin. Most people would tell you it means "The Beautiful Land" in the Indian language but not to the Ioway tribe still there today. The Ioway actually called themselves Bha-koh-je in their original language. The name comes from an incident long ago when, while camping in the Iowa River valley, a gust of wind blew a cloud of sand and campfire ashes onto their heads - thus Bah-kho-je, the Grey or Ashy Heads. All three of these (sleepy ones, ashy heads, and beautiful land) are meanings for the word "Iowa". The term "Ioway" actually came from the French word for the Bah-kho-je tribe living there - they never called themselves Ioway but the French name caught on in the naming of the state.

If you are looking for the origin of the state name Iowa then it came from an Ioway Indian tribe word. Historians believe the word "iowa" to have meant either "this is the place" or "Beautiful land"

Probably from an Indian word meaning “this is the place” or “the Beautiful Land”
