There are closing duties that have to be done after everyone leaves. These can include organizing the store, putting items on the shelves, cleaning up, counting out your drawer, many many things. Have fun! Some of the best times with co-workers can be when no customers are around!

This must be your first job, everybody does not walk out with the last customer. You have to organization the store for the next day when they open. If you are working in the stock department, you have to look at the shelves and see what needs to be brought out to the floor.
If you are a cashier you have to balance your register with the cash received, sales, returns, refund and all the money stuff.

Target, or any other retailer, does not lock their doors and send all employees home for the night. There is straightening and cleaning to be done. You have to get the returns and unwanted items and put them back where they belong. Unless you are not allowed to work past 10pm because of your age, there is nothing unusual about being scheduled past the store's closing time.

There are closing duties so before you take the job, find out the closing duties and ask what time the expectd time to finish. If you can't stay out that late, then the job isn't the right fit.
