No, you don't 'need' a charger for the Xbox 360 wireless controllers. They include 2 AA batteries, and when those die out, they can be replaced with new AA batteries.

Of course, you can always get the Xbox 360 Quick Charge Kit from Microsoft for your wireless controllers. I have a set and it works great!

No. You can use plain ol' batteries in it, and if you get the rechargeable batteries for it, there's a cable that converts your wireless controller into a wired one and charges your controller's battery included in the play and charge kit.

No. If you plan on using the regular batteries. But you should get a charger and extra battery back in order to reduce pollution to the environment.
