Ethernet is the way your computer 'talks' to the outside world!
It's the generic term for the physical and logical connection between your computer and anything else that is not your computer, e.g. router, ADSL modem ( maybe ), other computers in your network.
Other relevant terms are WifI, TCP/IP .
WiFi uses ethernet but does away with the cables,
TCP/IP is (usually) the protocol used over ethernet
.
There are other ways to do this USB, serial async connections, parallel connections ( usually printers ) , other network architectures Token Ring, but ethernet is the prevalent method.

Ethernet cards allow you to network (connect) your computer to other computers, either in your house (or office) or over the world wide web. It uses the same cabling as a fax machine, RJ-45 connector. Most computers today come with a built-in Ethernet card (commonly referred to as "network card" or "nic").
Generally we use our Ethernet cards to connect our computer to a cable modem or dsl, or sometimes to a router which we use to interconnect our computer to share devices such as printers or our high speed Internet connections or files from one computer to another.

ethernet is a card or device that allows you to network with other computers over a hub or use of the internet.
Ethernet is a large, diverse family of frame-based computer networking technologies for local area networks (LANs). The name comes from the physical concept of the ether. It defines a number of wiring and signaling standards for the physical layer, through means of network access at the Media Access Control (MAC)/Data Link Layer, and a common addressing format.
