anyone have any thoughts on booth rental vs. commission? How it normally works, which one you like better and why? As a soon to be salon owner (but not from hair industry) trying to figure out best way to go...any info./thoughts would be super!

could be either way.
Booth rental- you are guaranteed a monthly check whether your renters are making money or not.
Commission- You could make a lot more money off your service providers(then rental) if they have a good month. But you could make very little the next. Although this is also a great way to help your renters build their business. because they would have less expense. This will in turn earn you more money in the long run, because they have more business and you are earning more commission.
Another option is to start with a commission contract and see where it goes from there. Reevaluate your contract after a year or so. That way you would have an average amount of money you expect every month. You could then change it to a rental agreement.
