If they used to work, and now they don't, it could be that the cable has slipped out of the jack in the back of the computer (that happens to me all the time). If the speakers have never worked, then another possibility is that the cable is in the wrong jack. There are (most likely) three back there that look the same; make sure you've put it into the right one.

Sounds simplistic, but I would check those cables before I started changing the settings.

Hi. Great name! Usually one of the sound settings gets mucked up by a software installation the changes settings. Make sure the cables are hooked up right (don't laugh) and you are using the soundcard or on-board sound as your sound source. Switch them if you are not sure. Then fiddle with both the playback and recording settings. It is a good idea to grab a copy of QuickMix (free) to save the settings once they are working. http://www.freedownloadscenter.com/Multimedia_and_Graphics/Misc__Sound_Tools/QuickMix.html

Go to audio or sound in the control panel, open the properties and make sure your sound card is set as default and not your modem or an online setting from a website.
This happens to me quite a lot and I have to reset my audio card to default

Plugged in correctly ? Sound driver loaded and running? Speaker volume control up or down. System sounds volume control up or down.
