I most certainly agree with your statement, animals are a part of the family. Why do you think they are called "family" pets? Animals have feelings, quite sensitive ones at that. They can show anger, happiness, illness, fear and love. They have a heart, brain and can feel pain or pleasure as well. They can sense a person that has abused animals too. I have seen many animals react with fear and aggression with certain men and women. Why ? Because the dogs and cats that I have seen were previously abused and neglected so badly. That is why they wound up at the humane society. They don't care what you look like, or act like. As long as they are shown love and are taken care of properly. Pets are also used for therapeutic reasons as well. When I was at the humane society, they had a couple of dogs, a cat and a rabbit that they would take to nursing homes to visit the people who had to live there. They know when we are down in the dumps, they can tell when we are sick. They can even tell if we are happy or afraid too. It's like a 6th sense to them. I have had so many people say to me that animals are stupid. No they are not, they can be just as smart or even smarter than us humans. All animals deserve the up most respect from us humans. Sad to think tho, that so many animals are not treated the way they should be. I hope this helps with your essay and would like to wish you very much luck with it too.

megcanis i love your answer!!! I do treat my dog, as a member of the family. She knows I am in charge just, as a toddler would. She knows I love her and will take care of her just as a toddler would trust. The rules are a little different, but the love, the feeling of being part of my pack/family is all there. The reason why, is I trust few people in this world, however when loyalty is proved I am there for them 100%, and well a dog has never been disloyal. A dog has never hurt my feelings or whispered about me behind my back or lied. You get what you give with a dog, and more than you deserve sometimes. And the only ulterior motive a dog has is food.

Respect is the biggest thing with pets. So many people consider animals stupid. they are like little kids. Your average dog has the intelligence of a 4 year old. I have always considered my pets as children and treat then as such. Because I have been strict with them, reinforced good behavior, and given them jobs ( training) they are happy.

I think the #1 reason pets should be treated like family memebers is because this sort of mentality prevents people from neglecting and abusing their animals. When pets aren't seen as family members, they're often left outside, chained to a tree, basically forgotten about. I don't see anything wrong with pets being treated GREAT. I think it's silly, granted, to dress pets in thousand dollar collars and whatnot (there are better ways to spend that money!), but in general better treatment of pets is all righty by me.

Because, when you adopted them, that is, you take it upon yourself to take good care of them, love them, and all of the things that come with pets, you have made them a member of your family. You are their sister, brother, mother, father, or whatever......you are their whole life!!!!We should never forget that. They are taken away from their own mother at such a young age, so it is up to us to take care of them for the rest of their life.

Because they are apart of the family when you bring them into your home. Pet are family members too. They are like little kids. That you show love, caring, reasonably and they will give back just as much love as you give them.

Well, dogs, at least, trust us implicitly and love us unconditionally. They love us so much that they would do anything to please us, even suffer for us. They protect us with their lives, and sometimes go a step further and can actually save us in extreme situations. They have emotions like we do, and attach themselves to us without argument. You will rarely find another human in the world, more devoted and in love with you than your pet.

No. I love my animals, but it is important to respect your animals as ANIMALS, not little people, for their overall happiness and well being. Showing affection and love is fine, but overkill is bad for your pets and leads to behavioral problems.
