I am a UC berkeley student, I have a 3.86 in molecular cell biology and scored a 38 on my MCATS. I need a 1 year job that will pay relatively okay and will look good to medical schools. I really dislike lab research so I want to avoid that if possible. Any suggestions?

It might depend on what you think you want to go into in the future. If you are not interested in research, then don't bother doing it ... however if you are interested and are looking into Md/PhD, then try to find something targeted towards that field.

That being said, not all research in lab related- as you know. So if you wanted, there are a great number of Epidemiology / biostat jobs or something else in the public health field that are interesting in pay ok.

Overall in my opinion, you should do something in regards to patient care- if you can get your EMT license over the summer and work on an ambulance, that would probably be the best thing you could do. You have more than proven yourself academically, now all they will need is the assurance that you really want to treat patients ... without that a lot of places would not accept you no matter what your scores are. I do not see more research making much of a difference.

Good luck.

The problem with biology is you can't do much unless its research or it is health related. Since you don't want to do research I'd recommend a temp agency although it wont' get you the 1 year job you want. If there are openings you may be able to do work with US Customs the biology degree will come in handy. Or look for special projects like West Nile where you can do field research which may be more interesting for you. Good Luck. But I would definately recommend doing some type of research
