If you are looking for a PC and don't have enough money to buy the top-of-the line $2,500+ systems then I would go with Toshiba. You can get a really good laptop for under $800. They are known to be more reliable than other brands.
If you have a little more money to spend go with Fijutsu. I know it's pretty unknown in the United States, but in Asia it is the most trusted brand.
You want to go with a Japanese brand over an American brand if possible...

Statistically, Dell has been #1 for 13 years. They have also sold many, many PCs. They also have excellent customer service.
For practical purposes, Apple is the most innovative company. Their focus is mainly on a sleek design, hardcore processing power, and features you won't find anywhere else (back-lit keyboard, anyone?).
Dell is good because of there simple PC line-up with low prices and good looking systems. The many deals and savings also lure customers.
Besides the fact that HP created the revolutionary "Quick Play" system and light scribe disks, their computers are not really that popular. HP printers however are second-to-none in almost all categories.
Hope this helps!

Best: Alienware
But If you actually want to buy the computer
There really is no good computer company It
all has to do with the parts in it. So if your gonna
buy a new computer. Just pick whatever one
looks cool, and take the time to customize it
i suggest a intel CPU but if core 2 is too expencive
AMD has good midrange CPUs. If you care at all
about graphic intensive games GET NVIDIA. other
than that just get what suits you.

Dell won this computer contest against Apple, Compaq, and more, and is currently #1 for 13 years straight. You can't beat that.

Apple, hands down.
Apple's current growth rate is much higher than any PC manufacturer.
