i have been excused because of an exam and a funeral(honest), but i've just rang the court hotline number and have been told to turn up tomorrow, but am going to London on Friday and cant be on jury duty that day........

You cannot get out of Jury Service. You can ask to have it deferred to a later date.If,as you say,its tomorrow,you have left it a bit too late to do that.You will have to turn up,otherwise you will be commiting an offence.When you first received the letter to say you were being asked to do Jury Service, that was the time to have it deferred.As it stands,you will have to turn up.When you are there and are called down to a court,if it appears that the case is going to be a long one,you can go before the Judge or Magistrate and state you excuses as to why you cannot do it.BUT your excuse will need to be a good one.

If you don't turn up for jury service it is a criminal offence and you will get a criminal record. Phone up again and be absolutely sure.

Leave the country if you don't want to take on the responsibilities of a citizen. It isn't convenient for anyone - but you are supposed to do it. Rearrange your London trip.

Just tell them that you always assume the defendent is guilty, because he would not be there if he wasn't.
