Does it mean seafood and crackers? I've always been confused about what exactly it is. Hope someone can clear it up for me!

It usually means shrimp and steak. (Hence "surf" and "turf")

I think of it as angioplasty on a platter. Shrimp is a scavenger meat....full of parasites and crap you don't want to put in your body. (Have you ever bitten into one and found sand? You're biting into a whole lot of other things you don't want to, trust me!) As for the steak, lean beef in healthy portions (4 ounces) is good for you.....restaurant portions (12 ounces or more) in heaven-knows-what amount of fat content or artificial additives is not so healthy.

That may be more than you wanted to know, but it is an accurate definition!

It is seafood (surf) and land food (turf). The classic combination is a lobster tail paired with a fillet Mignon. Although combinations can vary, the turf is generally some type of steak, while the seafood could be a crab cake or shrimp etc. In short one lived in water, the other lived on land, prior to landing on your dinner plate.
I hope this helps you.

Seafood and steak

Surf for the seafood (you surf on the sea)
and Turf for the steak (which comes from cow's, who live on the 'turf')

It usually comes up at fancy restaurants that serve both seafood and steaks. Surf (seafood) and turf (beef). So usually lobster and a good steak.

Maybe 30 years ago, restaurants wanted to promote this new dinner where you got a piece of meat (steak or prime rib) and a piece of lobster. The name they came up with was Surf and Turf.
