My friend is about 4 and a half months pregnant and she had blood come out when she peed and then it stopped from that point and spotted for a few days. She also had some mucus blood come out the other day. She is already swelling in her hands and feet. Does she need to go to the ER?

Well, I'll be a nurse soon, does that count? There is no way to know if she is having a miscarriage until it actually happens. Some bleeding during pregnancy is normal. I would worry if it becomes heavy, like soaking more than one pad per hour, or if she starts passing gray looking clumps of tissue. Those are more definite signs of a miscarriage.

She could also be bleeding if she recently had sex or exercised. There could be many reasons behind it. There may be no reason at all.

If she were to go to the ER, they wouldn't be able to do anything for her. They might do an ultrasound to see if they could still see a heartbeat, but they might not even do that. Tell her to drink plenty of fluids and lay on her left side. She needs to take it easy for a few days. If the bleeding gets heavier or if she starts experiencing pain (not just cramping, but actual pain), then she needs to call her doctor. They wouldn't be able to stop it if it is a miscarriage, but they could give her something for pain.

I hope everything turns out well for her.

Um, I don't know how many doctors and nurses are answering questions on Yahoo. But, girl you need to get your friend to the hospital. At 4+1/2 months, it could be a miscarriage. Your friend needs to go get checked out.
