What a nasty little brat. I am fully aware that the swastika is a lucky Hindu symbol, but, unless he was Hindu, it's pretty obvious he was doing it to harass you for being Jewish.

If I had been your teacher and seen a kid draw a swastika on your paper, I would have made the entire class write me essays on the Holocaust and held my next lesson on that subject. Everyone would have been angry with him for the extra work, and it might have made a few people think.

I don't think there would be much point kicking him out of class - sounds like what he needed was more education, not less!

I'm sorry this happened to you.

If you told the teacher, he should have been disciplined, probably just mildly but firmly. Something to communicate to him that showing swastikas to jewish people is considered extremely offensive, and to explain why it is. Hopefully the act was just usual pre-teen boy behavior done with only a very superficial knowledge of WWII and not with any deep-seated resentment. Still, that would have been enough to make clear boundaries of behavior.

If he had done anything else after that, even a slight provocation, that in my view should lead to a much much harsher punishment. You shouldn't have had to tolerate anything beyond that first offense. If you did, you suffered an injustice, and our society is worse for it.

The swastika is actually a symbol from Asia and the Germans adopted it and used it for their own symbol. But the boy probably knew it batter as the German swastika. The teacher should have disciplined him by doing a ten page report on the holocaust and WWII.

He was being a nasty little snot and did it maliciously. He should have been reported to the teacher (which I dare say he was) and that teacher should have "educated" this little brat (who thought he was being clever - little does he know...). He should have had intensive sessions with Holocaust survivors and shown some graphic footage of what happened as a result of the nazis. No matter the origin of the "swastika", he intended is for maliciousness, and therefore needs to be corrected.

(If you want to be really infantile back, inform his that the Nazis also slaughtered homosexuals/political prisoners/Polish nationals/communists - take your pick and inform him he's in the same category as you - a jew!)

He should have been dragged into the street and shot.

Oh, wait. That's the kind of thing that we hate that symbol for now right?

Realistically, it depends on what else was involved. Was this a start to a pattern of harrassment, or did nothing else happen? If he did nothing else, I'd say a timeout, or a detention would have been enough.

If it led to more serious problems, then more should have been done. I'm not sure what could be done, and that may have been the problem here too.

Depends on the context.. a swastika has been a good luck symbol before the Nazis co-opted it.. even in American Indian Amerind.. you didnt state what the intnt was Even the USRA (Army) used the swasticka as a shoulder patch up to WWII (Thunderbirds) as have almost every culture.. its only become a bad thing since the nazis in germany

Few know the swasticka other than the nazi rereference.. but then again most people are well.. substandard...

He did a stupid and unkind thing that will harm him much more than you, but rather than punish him for the swastika he should be held accountable for putting graffitti on your paper.

This is a good question. The teacher missed out on a good opportunity to explain the attributes of acceptance, but I think that something should be said. I have to say that I have also heard of Jewish people that abhor any Christian symbols and even spit on the cross -

Nothing, he should have been punished for using your property (paper) but really, don't become one of those over -sensitive people, you will be very unhappy, people are racist, people have the right to be racist, it's just a fact of life. I don't agree with racism and I live with it every day but I am not going to try to change racist people, they have the right to be the way they are as long as they don't hurt me.

If that guy draws a swastika that's his problem, if he wants to be racist and go through his entire life having problems with one particular nationality and being bitter and angry about the fact that jewish people live in his block then that's his problem. But try to be tough, there will be people that will hate you for being jew or mexican or black and there will be people that will accept you, live your life to the fullest and don't let them touch you.
