a laptop was left on overnight and in the morning it states that it is locked although there has never been a password set it asks for one and a user?

Hold the power button down for 5 seconds. And then press the power button to restart the computer.

OR

Ask the user what their password is and enter the information into the window (where it asks for a password)

If you are the owner...if you never set a password...then someone is playing with you. You must have a username if it's XP, so just type your username, and if you don't have a password hit enter.

If there is no password, simply enter the user name and hit enter, leaving the password field empty. If it doesn't work, someone has been screwing around with you.

do not whatever you do go to your laptops maker like hp or dell because they will charge you a fortune. go to your local PC shop and they Willl do it sometimes for free email me and i can tell you a company that are professional and will do it for free they wil give you a code to put in over the phone the code is different for every model

What brand and model is it? Is it possible that someone tampered with it overnight?
