Seem to remember the chancellor promising free road tax for cars under 1000. That was some time ago. Has the idea been dropped does anyone know please?

The talk was all about cars with small engines and low emissions getting free road tax. This is currently in place, but there are only about 3 cars in the country that qualify!

Your best bet is to get a Tax Band B car like a Renault Clio or Megane 1.5 dCI (86bhp). They only cost £50 a year to tax. BARGAIN!

You've mis-heard (or mis-read) the idea.

Cars registered after 1st March 2001 (i.e from 51-plate) are taxed according to their CO2 emissions on the EC combined fuel-consumption cycle - which are listed in the manufacturers price lists, and in the back of most motoring magazines, and stated on the registration document (form V5c) of each individual car.

In the last budget, the chancellor introduced a new tax band of CO2 emissions up to 100g/km, with no charge. However no manufacturer currently builds a car that produces only 100g/km or less, so no new cars qualify. Only a few (147) Honda Insight hybrid coupés qualify for the zero rate, along with electric cars that were already zero-rated.

The Insight was built from 2000 to 2002, and 239 were registered in the UK, but 92 of those were registered before 1st March 2001 so are not taxed according to CO2 emissions.

Don't remember hearing of this, though there was once a tax cut for cars under 1100cc. Fine if you had a three-pot Vauxhall Corsa, but not if you had a certain version of Fiat Cinquecento...

Of course, they rose the threshold to 1500cc, and now it's all emissions and stuff.

The tax is £110-00 for a car up to 1549cc so he had not got rid of it.

Don't know but he certainly didn't forget to raise the cost of licences for larger engined cars. I'm not sure whether he said he would scrap tax for small engined cars or just lower it ..... probably just lower it. Does anyone actually have a car in this category ???

can't remember it being promised to be free but i do remember it being promised to be reduced.

they always do exaggerate though. probably just another lie to bring in the votes.
