james, think of yourself. You're doing exactly what they do, You say you feel very uncomfortable when they tell you such things and you are telling us, strangers for you, a characteristic of your personality.
Do you feel a little better?
That will give you an idea.

There are lots of reason people do and say things.
Sometimes people feel that they are acting oddly or are obviously upset and feel they need to explain themselves.
They may feel isolated by their experience and be trying to make contact.
It may slip out because its filling their mind to the exclusion of everything else.
It may be so unreal to them that they need to speak of it.
I gather you work in a shop; remember that you may see a thousand customers a week and only recognise a few of them but your customers see fewer shop assistant and if they are regulars may not see you as a stranger but as a nice person who might sympathise. just tell them you're sorry to hear it and you hope they'll be OK. It costs nothing to be pleasant to someone who's suffering.

when someone close to you has died or suffering from a terminal illness it makes you react differently. Some people may not have anyone to talk out their feelings so they will interact with strangers which is better than bottling things up inside . You just have to have patience .

I'd sooner tell a stranger on a commuter bus, or in a grocery store my problems--than a close friend, relative, co-worker or classmate. At least I never have to see them again, and they are more likely to have something in common with my problem.
Well...I tended bar for a number of years--so I am very used to virtual strangers telling me their problems. I didn't mind it whatsoever, and tried to help in any way I could.

I never share that sorta of thing with strangers or even acquaintances... I generally do not tell anyone anything... I say things on a need to k now basis... if you don't NEED to know then you will not be hearing it from me.
Some people call this stuck up... I call it not bothering others with stuff going on in my life that really does not concern them of effect them.

maybe they're still trying to convince themselves. or they want you to feel bad for them. most people don't disclose info like that unless it's somehow brought up in conversation.
