i need to know how to plot the points on a graph using only the equation. the equations are all linear. i know Y-intercept and all that.

PS: examples would help. thanks a lot i can't stand math, but i need it to pass 8th grade.

ok. first i will give u an example. y = 2x+3. the number before the "x" is the slope. 3 is the y inercept. put a dot at (0,3). then up two, over 1. put another dot. you go up 2, over 1, because it is rise over run. rise is up, run is to the right. 2x is also two over one x. so 2 is rise, 1 is run. I hope this helps.

Just select any two values for x, stick them - one at a time - into the equation and solve for y. Plot those x,y coordinates on your graph and draw a line through them.

For example, take the equation y = 4x - 3. Select any value for x, let's say x = 2. That gives you y = 4*2 - 3 = 8 - 3 = 5. So now you have one point (2,5).

Now select a second value for x, let's say 7. You get y = 4*7 - 3 = 28 - 3 = 25. Now you have a second point (7,25).

Plot the two points (2,5) and (7,25) on your graph paper. Draw a line through them.

The slope is the change in y value between the two points divided by the change in x value. For the above example you would get slope = (25 - 5)/(7 - 2) = 20/5 = 4. The slope of the equation is 4.

Did you notice that the slope came out to the same number as the coefficient of x in the original equation? That is because the equation is written in what is called slope-intercept form. If you take the problems that you are given and simplify them to this form (where there is nothing but y on one side of the equals sign and some number times x plus (or minus) some other number on the other side) then you don't even have to do the plotting because you already know the slope and, for that matter, the y intercept.

the equations have to be in slope intercept form which is y=mx+b
which means
the m is the slope
the b is the y intercept
alright well what you are going to do if you have a problem like
y=2x+3
you are going to first plot (0,3)
then you are going to from that point go down the slope, or 2 in this case
and over the y intercept
so if the point is (0,3) you will go down 2 and over 3 from the point
it is kinda hard to explain but that is how you do it

slope= upward thrust over run. So once you flow to graph this line, you are able to to up 9 on the y axis and for the time of seven on the x. this substances one aspect of the line, attempt this again, only start up from the point you only drew. in case you nonetheless dont get it imagine of it this type party: y= 5x+3, imagine of the x as a slope (upward thrust over run) 5/a million. wish this enables cheers!
