I had a friend like that. I figured that if it was such a big deal to her and it wasn't to me.. why not let her win if it means there won't be a huge fight and lots of gossip behind my back.

Yes. And they get worse with age (imagine an old guy who is like that - yuk!)
Best bet to deal with them, is to let them know that they are being childish, and walk away. When they calm down, you can have a frank discussion, or just don't 'play' with them again.

Whenever I meet someone like that I love to beat 'em really really badly, just to see them ready to explode. Who knows? It might eventually help them, you know, negative reinforcement and all that psychobabble...
