Something happened to my pc. I have windows xp and when i get to the profile log on screen it shows just a black screen with the cursor. So basically i can't get into windows.
pc details: brand:HP pentium 4

I forgot to mention that entering with safemode, safemode with command prompt, and last good convigureation will not work . How do i reformat or repair my cpu from the safemode menu?

CPU as of processor you don't fix it you replace it...

Usually the black screen with the cursor happens when there is a bad or misconfigured driver. It could also happen if you change a hardware component, like a video card, and you don't have the right driver for it. If any of this is the case, you should be able to get into Safe Mode, install the correct driver, and reboot.

If you've installed a new video card, and the hardware itself is bad, you won't be able to fix it without replacing the card.

try this reboot before windows starting screen appears keep pressing the F8 key about once a second until you see the boot menu use the cursor keys to highlight "last know good configuration" then press enter

If you know how to reinstall windows then that would fix it. Takes a little time and knowledge but its really not that hard. Or you could take it to a computer guy and pay astronomical amounts of money....100-200 just for somthing like that. Maybe more.

it should be giving you , the bios maker page ,during POST and give you an error ,like ram timing to tight , which usually is not the problem , If you just installed a video card , they take between 300-320 watts of power just to run , I suspect that your power supply is not big enough.

Hi. I agree with Biggles. F8 will allow you to select 'Safe mode' and if this works then your processor is not the problem.
