If the membrane didn't disinegrate, the chromosomes couldn't separate and move to opposite sides of the cell. The nuclear membrane keeps the chromosomes inside of itself

The chromosomes are going to have to be separated into two "stacks" or two regions. Kind of tough to do if they are wrapped up in one nuclear membrane.

Also - the spindle needs to pull on the centromeres.
