Bard believed his people deserved some of the treasure because they suffered so much because of Smaug. They had lost their homes, fields, and many died.

1. Bard killed Smaug.

2. Bard and others living at Long Lake were descendants of the men of Dale. Smaug took the treasure of Dale and added it to what he took from the dwarves.
