Allah was once one of several hundred idols worshipped in the Kabbah in Mecca. He was a Sabean moon diety that was traditionally respected by Mohammad's family. When Mohammad invented his religion, he co-opted the Judeo-Christian God by claiming that he was Allah.

In the context of the Ten Commandments, it would be anything that you place before God in importance.
Using the book of Exodus as an example, the Israelites made a golden calf and began to worship it. The calf was itself a part of creation. It could not represent God so it became a false idol. Only God is God.
Some denominations even removed the cross from their churches because they believe that by focusing on the cross, you loose your focus on God. So in their context they view the cross as a potential false idol.

In the modern world mostly all movie actors, pop singers, and professional sport stars are false idols because people idolize them and the bible says you're not supposed to do that.

Actually, Neoimperialistxxi is spot on. Allah was known to arab pagans long before Muhammad made up that religion of his. He was the L Ron Hubbard of his generation.
"According to the Encyclopedia of Religion, Allah corresponded to the Babylonian god Baal, and Arabs knew of him long before Mohammed worshipped him as the supreme God. Before Islam the Arabs recognized many gods and goddesses, each tribe had their own deity. There were also nature deities. Allah was the god of the local Quarish tribe, which was Mohammed's tribe before he invented Islam to lead his people out of their polytheism. Allah was then known as the Moon God, who had 3 daughters who were viewed as intercessors for the people into Allah. Their names were Al-at, Al-uzza, and Al-Manat, which were three goddesses; the first two daughters of Allah had names which were feminine forms of Allah. Hubal was the chief God of the Kaaba among the other 360 deities. Hubal was the chief God of the Kaaba among the other 360 deities. Hubal was a statue likeness of a man whose body was made of red precious stones whose arms were made of gold. (Reference Islam George Braswell Jr.)"

Codependency is a good example of a false idol. As is anger, denial, etc.
They all allow us to 'control' our lives, allowing us to be 'independent' from God, instead of dependent as he allowed us to be. They allow us to (attempt to) fix our own problems, avoid pain, etc.

Any Idols of today are the things we Humans lust after.
Anything that replaces God.
Any false teaching is an Ofence to God. It replaces the one and only living God.
(Zec 10:2) For the idols have spoken vanity, and the diviners have seen a lie, and have told false dreams; they comfort in vain: therefore they went their way as a flock, they were troubled, because [there was] no shepherd.
(Psa 97:9) For thou, LORD, [art] high above all the earth: thou art exalted far above all gods.
(Psa 136:2) O give thanks unto the God of gods: for his mercy [endureth] for ever.
( Psa 86:8) Among the gods [there is] none like unto thee, O Lord; neither [are there any works] like unto thy works.
(Psa 135:5) For I know that the LORD [is] great, and [that] our Lord [is] above all gods
(Exd 23:7) Keep thee far from a false matter; and the innocent and righteous slay thou not: for I ( God) will not justify the wicked.
( Psa 119:128) Therefore I esteem all [thy] precepts [concerning] all [things to be] right; [and] I hate every false way.
(1Jo 4:1) Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world.
(Gal 2:4) And that because of false brethren unawares brought in, who came in privily to spy out our liberty which we have in Christ Jesus, that they might bring us into bondage:
(2Ch 32:14) Who [was there] among all the gods of those nations that my fathers utterly destroyed, that could deliver his people out of mine hand, that your God should be able to deliver you out of mine hand?
So you see that no one can excape jusdgment from the one and only living God. Her is Judge of all nations and peoples. Every one from Adam to you to day.

Anything at all that you love so much that it takes you away from loving God above all things| (It could be money, sex, material possessions, hobbies, friends, or even your family if you love them with an inordinate smothering love)|
