I'm getting an XBOX 360 system and need to buy an extra controller. I thought, however, that I might could save some $$$ by buying a generic controller as opposed to a Microsoft brand. First, though, I need to know if buying a generic controller (MadCatz or Pelican) is safe and reliable. I've had some for PS2 that have gone bad. So I guess the question is what kind of extra controller should I get and why?

No, they are the worst controllers are the worst. They break really easily and are not very reliable in many other different ways.

I have actually never seen any third party Xbox 360 controllers in australia yet. Although, its best to avoid third party brands, though they may be cheap but they may break no time at all and buying two would possibly make up that same price of the genuine brand
