ASL is the closest thing to a universal language for the HI. I know and use SEE which is Signed Exact English. It uses more tense endings and initials attached to ASL signs. For me SEE is a little more precise but for general communication ASL is a lot faster and gets the message communicated.

All languages are codes. Learning to read them is called de-coding.

I love ASL itz so beautiful.. i learned it 8 yr ago in High School and just fell in love with the language and the people. Now it is a language b/c it has itz own grammatical structure. now SEE (signing exact english) is just a code and not a language but ASL is unique to itself. So yes its a legal language that's how it can be taught as a foreign language in Hign School

It's a legal language, it's easy to learn, and it's great for teaching babies to communicate before they can talk.

I consider it a legitimate language.
I truly wish I could "speak" it!
