Political and religious beliefs are so strongly entrenched from childhood, in most people, that an attack on those beliefs are considered to be a very personal attack and as such pretty much elicit an automatic negative reaction.

I think many people take criticism about their own political party poorly because people can't handle criticism; especially when it is about something that represents them. Political parties are created to lure people in, divide us all in some way or form. We join this bandwagon and are taught to believe what they tell us to.In a confrontation, there are two different reactions you can have: fight or flight. When individuals stand for something they believe strongly or passionately, they will be more likely to stand their ground and argue right back (fight). Also, I feel that for many people their political affiliation also represents the way in which they believe the country they live in should be governed and handled. Who wouldn't get defensive about the way one's country is run?

well... the main problem is... most of it's not construtive criticism... on both sides...
then when actual constructive criticism comes along in the vast ocean of non-constructive criticism... you're so defensive by that point, you just don't care anymore...
the majority seems to be baseless name calling... and no one likes that...

Depends on the criticism. If it's sarcastic criticism, then I can see someone not liking it. That's usually what it is on YA! I have yet to see constructive criticism on this site.

Because we are currently mired in such a period of antagonism that folks assume that any criticism of thier party is not contructive...just partisan...
And....unfortunately....they are usually right.....
Talk radio is largely to blame for this decline in the nature of our civil discourse.....They are all about disrespecting those that disagree with them....they are about being hostile towards those with opposing ideas.....they tell people that they are RIGHT to attack the other side...constructivenes be damned....

No one wants to be told that their beliefs are full of S**t. Everyone believes what they want to, even if it is absurd, like some of the crap on this site.
