When there is a solar eclipse the moon passes between the sun and earth. This is the time of the month known as a new moon where we see only the dark side of the moon. When the sun is covered the light is diminished where we are standing thus the appearance of dark.

It depends on whether its a partial solar eclipse or a total. The moon isn't visible because its on the same side as of the sky as the sun (i.e. a new moon day). During a total eclipse, it gets right in front of the sun and blocks it out totally. So we stop getting light from the sun and the sky turns dark like night for a few minutes and you see the back of the moon (its dark or shadow side). During a partial eclipse, the moon blocks the sun only partially and the sky darkens only a bit.

Not black, but decreased brightness. Depending on how much coverage is on the sun.
