last nite i got an IM from a friend and when I looked at it, it said "Hey, check this out" , then lots of letters with my email address at the end. I didn't click on the link, but when i went to ask the friend what this was, you could see all my on-line contacts screens come up. I spent lots of time trying to get rid of this today, and think i was successful. HOWEVER, when i turned my computer back on, i have a background that says IMTools.org with lots of advertisement on it. I have tried many diff't ways to get rid of this but it keeps coming back....can anyone help me!!???

While all the answer given here are fully correct and helpful. We are trying to get to the bottom of this.
By this I mean me.. however Msn are know fully aware of the situation, and the last I heard the author of the program has been caught.

I urge you to warn all your friends NOT to click the link. As soon as a solution / help can be offered I will be positing it. Some time tomorrow lunch time hopefully (12:00 BST England)

Again as all the answer suggest:

Download a virus scanner and spyware detector application.

Well just like IMNames its spread through people who no little about computers or trust there friends to much. Its ad-ware that spreads via MSN and trys to spread its self however IMTools Ive never seen but it sounds like Ad-Ware and Spy-Ware (due to the ads) so search goggle for IMTools Remover and then try AOL Active Virus Sheild which has a 99%+ detection rate of viruses and get Ad-Aware Personal SE which are both free and the best of free anti-virus and anti-spyware (not AVG Free as its only 83%)

Hi

Try installing AVG Anti-Spyware from Grisoft (it's free)

http://www.free.grisoft.com

Run a full system scan and it should find it and remove it.

If not try Spybot (another free anti-spyware program):

http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html

Finally (and you shouldn't need this cos it sounds like Spyware not a virus) you could try AVG Anti-Virus (free again):

Hope that helps
