Because their right wing channels tell them the media is liberal.
The "liberal media" nonsense is a lie started by the right to discredit any news that does not fall in line with their agenda.
It is pathetic how people actually believe the media is liberal, Amerian media is a watered down joke.

Because the conservatives have Fox News, a fairly recent creation, and some talk radio such as Rush Limbaugh. Liberals control C.B.S., N.B.C., A.B.C., C.N.N., M.S.N.B.C., N.P.R., and until it recently went bankrupt because of terrible programming, Talk America. Newspapers like the New York Times and The Washington Post also slant to the left. Add to that every empty-headed Hollywood star that has dared to stray from a script to open their mouths and reveal their gullibility and naivety when it comes to politics and the ways of the world. This is why people say that the media has a liberal bias. It truly does.

Look its simple. Basicly CNN and everyone else in the news business is liberally or at least left leaning except Fox. 1 station. Conservatives own talk radio but that is POLITICAL OPINION, not news. As far as news outlets go its 99% liberal, hence... the liberal media accusation. Now the liberals are trying to pass legislation saying that all conserative radio talk shows have to have a balance and have a liberal view 50% of the time, yet they are not trying to bring that same balance to the news media which they alreday own. Typical hypocracy of the left.

The problem is that American news agencies don't cover the news like news, they cover it like a tabloid for entertainment. The news anchors are also made into personalities and celebrities, which suggests somehow their opinion of what they're describing has value. It shouldn't. News agencies should report news---all news---without any color or slant to one direction or another. There is no source for news like that in the US. Every news source promotes specific agendas, whether it is related to political goals or advertising dollars.
That said, the talk radio is not news, it's entertainment. And with Fox as the only news channel that is considered somewhat conservative, it's true that it is outnumbered by its competitors who are seen by some as being less conservative. However, when Rupert Murdoch's son was put in charge of Fox News a while back, he started changes that have created a less wholly conservative news network. This has disappointed some conservatives who felt like it was their only source for news with the bias they prefer.
What you have here are two sets of people with two differing views, and news agencies that all show bias and sensationalistic slants in their reporting. But a conservative will see Fox as offering the "true" and "fair" news, because it matches with his/her beliefs. A non-conservative will find the other networks as the "fair" and "true" news, because they match with his/her beliefs. Both sides will find the other type of slanted news nutty and biased (because it's biased in a way that displeases them). But the fact of the matter is that there is only one news source with that conservative bias that pleases the conservatives, and many more with the non-conservative bias that please the non-conservatives. Personally, I find none of them helpful, since they're all biased. BBC World News is a better option. It also actually shows world news, not just US-interest news.

Watch a network news and Fox news the same night and compare the stories they have on! 60 Minutes should be ashamed of itself. There is NO effort to offer a balanced report. John Mayer says it best "...when you own the news you can bend it how you want." The audience for all the other news sources makes the liberal media way out ahead and they make NO effort to be fair.

It is called propaganda. If you say something enough times, whether true or not, people tend to believe it. It is convienient, when trying to needle the other side, to forget your side has people too.
Subconsiously people want to think of themselves as the underdog, victims of the mean and nasty other side and so they make very one sided charges such as media bias slant in only one direction, the other of course, in hopes they can gain sympathy for being so overwhelmingly picked on.
The thing is I can tell when they have been listening to the spewings of the media you mention because of what they say and how it is said.
Some on the liberal side are no different but most of what I see in whining about media bias comes from conservatives just as they start spewing from the very media that is so bias toward the other side but not really. (conservative hate radio, fox etc. )

To me, the only kind of media about governmental issues to take seriously is C-Span. They don't put a spin on anything. They cover the Senate hearings live so you can watch what was said and in what context it was said. They cover both sides of every issue. Then you can call in or just listen to the different perspectives of others who call. You don't hear anybody spouting half truths to create some kind of ridiculous characterization of someone. It never ceases to amaze me how people fall for that blather. It's my guess that this kind of coverage is just too boring for most people. To me its a relief to know there is at least one place to get some honest, civilized, coverage of our government in action.

Because the media and politicians tell them so. Just because Fox is far right of center does not make the others left of center. OK so the first line may be alittle harsh. The fact of the matter is most people will always view themselves somewhat closer to the center than they actually are and view everything else from that perspective.
As well most people don't use media sources outside of the United States to check their perspective on American Media.

1 cable channel compared to what 3 major networks and a ton of cable networks and shows and almost all newspapers. Ever read the NY times? It's like reading brainwashing propaganda. 1 doesn't add up to 10 although most Libs can only count that high if it comes in the form of a food stamp packet.
