nil mean null, nothing.. it's represented by zero in the scoreline... but for commentator it's just easy to spell out nil than zero... when everything he talks need to be fast... and he might bite his tongue saying zero

I'm not sure where it started from, but the word "nil" means "zero", or no score for that team. Can also imply "nothing" or things along that line.

Usually, "nothing," "zero", for example a score of 5,0 might be read as "five, nil." But that's my general sense of the word. Is it the same in soccer (I think so, but what do I know?)

It means 0, I think it came from Russian because Nol means 0 in Russian and that sounds like it.
