The best time to replace your ink cartridges is when the colors start to get faint. Some printers have "sensors" that tell you when your ink level is getting low, but these sensors are notoriously inaccurate, and should never be listened to. When they say your ink level is low, you usually have a good month of normal usage. Also, if the pages you print out start to get lighter and lighter, shaking the ink cartridges might help, or at least allow you to print a few more pages. Hope this helps!

All printer parts and consumables have a service life.
There is a great difference from one to another, and most will be used before the termination of their service life.

An ink tank cartridge with no electronics can last upwards of two years from date of manufacture.

A cartridge with print head and electronics will only last about 12-18 months from date of manufacture.

A toner cartridge will last about 2 years.

Some cartridges for higher end printer will have a smart chip which will be date sensitive and expire at the end of their service life regardless of if there is ink or not.

With regards to consumption..
Each individual cartridge has a page yield which for black is calculated at 5% coverage, on low Quality, for color it is calculated at `15% coverage on low quality.

This varies from cartridge to cartridge depend ant upon the quantity of ink as well as the delivery system. Some waste more than others.

Providing you are a normal user the time to replace the cartridge is at the initial signs of fading. That is your first indication that your ink is low. Also if you are not using the printer you may need to replace the cartridge after 30 days of not using. Ink jet only. The ink will dry and block the print head.

The software for your printer usually tells you how much of each is left. It depends on how much you are printing. I have heavy load cartridges, which lasts me at least 6 months, depending on how much I am printing. Every one is different. You could check the different manufacturers of ink, they usually have a description of the general use is for them.
