To find the slope and the y-intercept of a line, the first step is to make sure that the equation of the line is presented in "standard" form.

What's standard form? y = mx +b

Your problem, as presented, is not in standard form, so the first step is to move the numbers around a bit, and get it that way.

6x - 2y = 14 becomes
6x - 14 = 2y
which is, of course, equivalent to
2y = 6x - 14

Notice that we're still not in standard form - the standard form of a line describes the line in terms of y, and we're looking at an equation of 2y. Let's solve that by dividing everything by 2:

y = 3x - 7

There's our standard form - now that we're here, finding the slope and y intercept is easy. In the equation y = mx + b, the m is the slope and the b is the y-intercept.

For our equation of y = 3x - 7, the slope is 3 (see?) and the y-intercept is -7.

How do we know that the y-intercept is NEGATIVE seven? The y-intercept of a line is the point at which the line would cross the y axis if x was zero. If we set x equal to 0 in the equation of the line, we would get y = -7.

Check the topic of this section folks - it's called HOMEWORK HELP. Gee, I wonder why anyone would post a question in a topic called homework help. Hmmm...

Wow it somewhat is relatively elementary! The y intercept is clearly -7 because of the fact you're making x 0 which leaves -2y=14; remedy for y. to discover the slope you isolate y it somewhat is then y=3x-7 so slope is 3!

6x-2y=14
-2y=14-6x
divide by -2
y= -7+3x
3 is the slope
-7 is the y intercept

you need to put it into slope intercept form, by solving fot y
so it would be
6x-2y=14
-2y=-6x+14
y=3x-7

slope intercept form is y=mx + b
m is slope and b is y intercept, so 3 is your slope and -7 is your y intercept

subtract 6x and divide by negative 2 you get y=3x-7

so the slope is 3 and the y intercept is -7

slope = m in form y=mx + b ---> convert to this form
6x - 2y = 14
6x - 2y - 6x = 14 - 6x
-2y = 14 - 6x
-2y / -2 = (14 - 6x) / -2
y = (14 - 6x) / -2
y = -7 + 3x
y = 3x + -7 or y = 3x -7
m = 3 - refer to equation at top

6x-2y=14
-2y=14-6x
y=-7+3x

so.. slope is 3, y int is -7 or (0, -7)

By setting x to 0, you'll get a y-intercept = -7

y=mx + b
m=slope

slope = 3
