I am trying to backup my desktop using an external drive and it won't let me because of this FAT2 stuff...HELP!!!

format it in ntfs

You actually mean FAT32, and yes, you could change it to something like NTFS but that really wouldn't solve your problem as FAT32 is the standard format for external drives and the like so that in itself wouldn't stop you copying stuff onto it; there must be something else wrong.

It sounds like your computer is setup on NTFS and the external is set to FAT32. They are incompatible in that order. NTFS cannot go to FAT32 but it can go the other way. You need to convert the external to NTFS, which requires that you format it, and that should take care of it.

You need to change it to NTFS, which with Partition Magic you can without losing data.

afaik, yes, you can reformat the hdd and change its file system from fat32 to something else, like ext2, ext3 etc.

You'll need a program to do that, since I think windows won't let you do that...
