It's called the Dead Sea because nothing lives in it. It is some of the saltiest water anywhere in the world, almost six times as salty as the ocean! The Dead Sea is completely landlocked and it gets saltier with increasing depth. The surface, fed by the River Jordan, is the least saline. Down to about 130 feet (40 meters), the seawater comprises about 300 grams of salt per kilogram of seawater. That's about ten times the salinity of the oceans. Below 300 feet, though, the sea has 332 grams of salt per kilogram of seawater and is saturated. Salt precipitates out and piles up on the bottom of the sea.

There's no seaweed or plants of any kind in or around the water. There are no fish or any kind of swimming, squirming creatures living in or near the water. As a matter of fact, what you'll see on the shores of the Sea is white, crystals of salt covering EVERYTHING. And this is no ordinary table salt, either. The salts found in the Dead Sea are mineral salts, just like you find in the oceans of the world, only in extreme concentrations. The water in the Dead Sea is deadly to living things. Fish accidentally swimming into the waters from one of the several freshwater streams that feed the Sea are killed instantly, their bodies quickly coated with a preserving layer of salt crystals and then tossed onto shore by the wind and waves. Brutal!

Humans are remarkably adaptable. We can swim in the Dead Sea, just like we can swim in the ocean. Well, people don't really "swim" in the Dead Sea - they just "hang out". That's what's so cool about the Dead Sea. Because of the extremely high concentration of dissolved mineral salts in the water its density is way more than that of plain old fresh water. What this means is our bodies are more buoyant in the Dead Sea - so you bob like a cork. In fact, people are so buoyant in this water, it makes it kinda tough to actually swim. Most people like to just kick back in the water and read.

The Dead Sea is a lake about 47 miles long and 10 miles wide, bordered on the west by Israel and and on the east my Jordan. It is actually the lowest body of water in the world, and as a result, gets water from many sources, but water only leaves this lake by evaporation, so all of the salts brought into the Dead Sea never leave. The influx of water (mainly by the Jordan river) is large, but because evaporation occurs so quickly in the arid climate, the Dead Sea gets rid of water just as quickly as it comes in. This rapid filling and evaporation just increases the concentration of salts in the lake, so that its average salinity (a measure of the quantity of dissolved salt in water) is 240 grams per kilogram. This number varies with depth, but it makes it clear that the Dead Sea is significantly more salty than the oceans (an average of 35 grams per kilogram). This salinity makes it impossible for any life (except a few microscopic organisms) to exist there, and it is also what makes it possible for us to float. The salt molecules make the water dense so that our bodies can't push through the water molecules and break the bonds in between them.
I hope this answers you question. Have a great day!

Dead Sea Buoyancy

In normal water, there has an Archimedes force to push up people. In the Dead Sea, the salinity is very high (31-32%); therefore, density of sea water is high too and leads to Archimedes force is high. This force will make people float more easily. Also you can swim properly in there. Cheers.

People float in any sea water. But in the Dead Sea, you will float higher, because the water is denser due to the high levels of salt.

RE:
how is it possible that we can float in the dead sea?

Why not? For the same reason we can float in any water, tho we would float a bit higher in the Dead Sea because of the high salt content - makes it more dense.

Because of the high concentration of salt in the Dead Sea.

The density of the water is much hight due to the fact that there are so much salt and many different minerals. (It is the same reason you can float better in the sea than the lake)

It is so full of salt that the water is incredibly dense compared to human density. So therfore we float.
This is why it is called the dead sea too. It is so salty no marine life could actually live in it. so it is empty of life.
