Sit and count breaths. Every time you get to 10, start over at 1.
Do this for 20 minutes. You'll be surprised how your mind tries to make noise and distract you. Try to just focus on the counting, and let the other thoughts go.

Sit comfortably but straight on the floor or a chair, light a candle and look at the flame for some time and try to cleanse your mind from all thoughts. Let the thoughts come and then let them disappear. Fill your mind with the light of the flame. Breath slowly and deeply, you may now want to close your eyes or continue looking at the flame, but focus on the flame and don´t let it fade away.
Next you may want to concentrate on some specific thing or thought, like guiding your meditation. Concentrate on that thought or image and let your mind make up what follows.
A good way to relax before meditation is to sit quietly and maybe listen to some soft music and breath deeply and slowly.

There are many methods of meditation--but all have one goal---to still the chattering mind--choosing a quiet place is a good start-then you can choose the method that suits you the best---whether it's watching the flame on a candle, being with your breathing, being guided by a meditation tape,etc--try them all--choose the one you feel at ease with--but above all---don't try to fight the mind--just gently bring it back to the original focus.
