Yes, Leslie dies and that is sad as you will become attached to her free spirit. The sadness is deeped by knowledge gained from May Bellles ominious question of Leslie about her lack of belief in Jesus.
I cried at the end of bridge to teribitha tonight, not when leslie died but as Jesse so loving took his little sister out over the bridge to introduce her to the possibilities of Teribitha. He continued the tradition started by his friend and Teribitha continues.

I haven't seen the movie, but I've read the book. In the book, the girl swings on a rope to cross the river to get to Terabithia. The rope breaks and she falls into the river, but she can't swim and she drowns.

At the end Jess's best friend (Leslie) dies because she swung on the rope to Terabithia and it snapped. She hit the edge of the ground and drowned

Leslie dies. However I do wish to correct one answer in saying that Leslie can swim just fine. What I get from the book is the rope breaks and she hits her head on something that knocks her out. She falls unconscious into the water and drowns.

The girl who the boy befriends dies by swinging on a rope and hitting her head. He believes it is his fault because he chose not to invite her to the art museum.
