Before we go, I compile a dossier of the route consisting of each station and town, its history and industries and if it has an interesting cathedral or landmark, I look for it as we pass through. Maybe the train will go over an viaduct or a bridge built by Isombard Kingdom Brunel. Some towns have famous people who were born there. I also like to spot fishermen along rivers and whether cows are standing up which tells me about the likely weather. A lunch basket plus a book are always a good idea.
