While the first answerer said what is accomplished by using ATP, they didn't go into the how. When an enzyme uses ATP for fuel, it is breaking the two outermost phosphate groups off to give inorganic pyrophosphate (or PPi) and one AMP. The enzyme uses the energy trapped in that bond to power movement of the enzyme. This movement will bring results in the catalytic center opening up, the movement of substrates, the ejection of substrates, etc.
