If the people were born blind, they have no visual imagery; the dreams consist of impressions from the other senses -- touch, hearing, smell, and taste. If the people were sighted and then became blind, their dreams contain visual imagery -- but these visual dreams might cease to occur eventually

Totally agree with the previous answer:
"If you go blind after being able to see I'm pretty sure you can.
If you were born blind, you've never had the experience of sight so you can't dream in images. You would just dream in the way you experience the world, without sight. "
I'd just add the following: Everything, absolutely everything that we have inside our brains comes from outside, mostly through vision. Every thought and image that we have in our heads comes from outside. Only religious people might believe otherwise because they think that God is capable of putting "stuff" into our heads.

A blind friend of mine who has been blind since birth has told me of some very vivid and descriptive dreams.

Yeah, sure. Beacause it's all in your mind. The dream might be an interpretation and expectation of what you'd want to see.
