The original CPU was a 1.6ghz p4. The pc will just stop when it tries to start.

Before doing any type of cpu upgrade be sure to find out form the manufacturer what is the maximum speed the pc can handle, then run a BIOS update on the board to fix any issues upgrading may cause. It sounds as though the 3ghz cpu wont work in that unit.

Umm... you can't, usually.

If the motherboard was made around the time the 1.6 was out, then it most likely will not have support for the newer, faster processors.
