They have the outside pockets sewn up to prevent people from putting things like jewelry or any small, expensive item into the pockets. If they buy the coat, then they get all the goodies that they stuffed in the pockets for free.

Many a good suit has the pockets loosely sewn . It's just waiting for some stylish person to set it free so it can hold all the money you plan to haul around . LOL
I think they keep the shape better hanging on a rack .
Just pull the string or snip the thread carefully and 'voila' there is your pocket .

Prevents you from putting your hands in your pockets- when they are sewed shut they tend to lay flat and you achieve a more polished look.
