i checked my record today at the courthouse and my retail theft charge was dispositioned as a "city ordinance violation" but not as a misdeamenor. when filling out my application for security clearance it asks if i'd had any misdeamenors or felonies. i don't know if i should go ahead and check yes or forget about filling out the application.

Yes, when I aksed when I got my security clearance what that little box meant, they said, simple, have you ever spent time in handcuffs or in the back of a police cruiser, so, yes, in your case, you should be honest. Because you KNOW they will do their homework on you, especially in today's security climate.

It all depends in the City and State where you had your incident. Alot times a munical ordinance is as equivalent as a Class C misdeamenor. Which is the lowest of all, a Class C misdeameanor also equals a trafic ticket.

I would check yes and, in the space they allow for the explanation, write 'city ordinance violation'. You can explain what happened during your interview but, at least this way, you will get to an interview. Personality, age, the context, all have an effect on an interviewer.
