Hmm.. OK you could try some of the old classic films: Akira, X, Ghost in The Shell, Ninja Scroll and so on.

I also like the beautiful and dark Samurai X, (a short mini series that is the prequel of the much more light and fluffy Rurouni Kenshin which is also fantastic but not what you you are looking for). Hellsing also has a great dark vibe to it

I haven't seen many of the darker more adult violent animes but if you want something a bit lighter but with lots of violence in there are series like Samurai Deeper Kyo and Saiyuki which have the violence but humour running through them too.

Yes. Try "Dai Mahou Touge".

There are only six episodes of Dai Mahou Touge (and 3 Omakes), but there's a reasonable amount of humor and gratuitous violence. Maybe not as much as Elfen Lied, but a plenty of good humorous visual violence.

----
"Dai Mahou Touge is a parody of magical princess animes, and often uses the juxtaposition of cute characters with brutal violence for humor."

I'll assume you've seen "Gantz", so I won't suggest it. If I can think of any others, I'll edit my post.
