My 7 year old who is repeating the 1st grade has been having problems learning. He can learn its just takes a long time for him to grasp things.I am not sure if it is beacuse he just imature or if there is a problem. I pushed for the school to test him for a learning diasbility and they are now going to test for dislexia and do a IQ test. My question is what is the IQ test for? I mean he is very inteligant other wise.

IQ tests have different sections. The overall number doesn't mean much, but the test could show areas of strength and weakness. Also it can show if your child learns better by listening or by looking at something on paper. It is just part of the evaluation they do to figure out how to help a child learn.

IQ tests provide one means of assessing "intelligence"- and potential in certain areas - that is less sensitive to training (and, therefore, is a better measure of "true" intelligence) and better standardised than other means. Whether or not such tests are "adequate" depends on the objectives of the testing.
IQ testing is far from perfect - but there is a lot of evidence to suggest it is a pretty good predictor of a person's academic success (which is a fair leader to economic success as and adult). Whether it measures intelligence or not is very debatable - but it can be considered to be a reasonably accurate measure of a limited part of human intelligence.
Take care.

it is standard. they are testing all areas just to cover all bases. my third grader was having trouble at school last year while, at the same time, displaying intelligence in every area but school work. he has been diagnosed with dyslexia and under proper instruction and the help of certain reading tools his grades have improved dramatically. don't worry they are just checking everything.
