All 4 tires are the same, but the rear 2 are much more worn than the front 2 which are about a year old and have a good amount of tread depth left. The rear 2 are however much older and have less tread depth although I dont think they need to immediately be replaced. My question is should they be in the back or the front? I am starting to notice more and more skidding sounds but im not skidding. You know the tire squeal when you take corners hard. Im not slipping though but I know its not far off. I dont have the money to replace any they are expensive. Oh yea and if it matters I have an all wheel drive ford explorer (97) its not 4-wheel drive, its all-wheel drive. There is a difference. Thanks!

Thanks for all the quick answers. I think I'll leave it as it is... with the worn ones in the rear. I hadnt thought of the braking part. Thats an important factor to take into consideration!

Regardless of the wheels that are being driven.. front wheels do 70% of the braking and all of the steering. So those are the most important ones. Put the good tires up there. If you get new ones.. replace the most worn tires, put the new ones up front and put the older ones in the back.

Always put the better tires on the back, regardless of FWD, AWD, or whatever. If you get into trouble such as hydroplaning, the front end might wash out but just lifting off the gas will slow you down to regain traction and control. If the back end looses traction you will spin out of control. There is a good article explaining this on tirerack.com
here is a paragraph out of their test results:
Intuition suggests that since the front tires wore out first and because there is still about half-tread remaining on the rear tires, the new tires should be installed on the front axle. This will provide more traction, and by the time the front tires have worn out for the second time, the rear tires will be worn out too. However in this case, intuition isn't right...and following it can be downright dangerous.

Good ones on the front. Since it's AWD I would replace the 2 worn tires and try to have all 4 tires with the same tread depth. In that case, put the new ones on the front, where they will wear faster than the rear ones because they carry more weight and do more braking.

I will keep one good and one worn out in front and other twos at back...

you use most of your front wheels to turn and they will be more likely to affect your driving before the rear ones.

I would keep them in the back, since it's all wheel drive you won't be slipping as much as you would with rear wheel drive. getting new tires all around would the best bet though.

I would put the 2 with more tread on the front. The tires are newer and have more tread, making the chance of a blow out somewhat less.

It depends on if you have four-wheel drive or not, but I would say on the back, just because you want to have some traction (especially in bad weather) on the part of the car that stops first.(The front).

Actually, its been proven that you should put them on the Front (The new ones). Why? Well what tires control where your vehicle ends up?

Don't cut corners on tyres, they are the only things keeping you gripped to the road.

Buy some new ones!
