I think you should be asking your Mom for some more information. As a Mom, she needs to be the one telling you what to look for. My Mom started her period at nine, I got my first period @ 11. It all depends on the person, etc.

"You will probably feel some moderate symptoms when you first get your period. You may notice that you feel bloated or uncomfortable – this is caused by water that your body retains during menstruation. Other signs of menarche include a slight headache, leg ache or backache for a few hours. The most common symptom of menarche, is cramping. You may feel abdominal cramping, similar to a stomachache for the first few days of your period. Try taking an over-the-counter pain medication, such as Advil or Tylenol, for the pain."

Usually with your first period, there aren't many signs to begin with. You may feel some cramping really low in your tummy, and when it starts, you will see blood in your underwear. Don't freak out, it's normal. Your breasts may be a bit tender and sore right before. You may feel like your emotions are out of control, and you get upset more then normal, but then you're doing that anyways, right? Some times it's really hard to tell because the symptoms before you start are the same as puberty. Sorry I can't tell you more. It will start when your body says it's time. Until then, just enjoy not having it!! ;)

I personally think the timing of your mother's cycle is closely related to when you can expect yours to begin. If you can check on when your maternal grandmother (mom's mom) got hers - all the better to judge. There is no science behind it, but girls are getting them sooner than ever before.
Most every girl I ever new was wearing light colored slacks or skirts the day it happened - at school with lots of people around (I don't mean to scare you, it's just what I witnessed). It's just a great big cosmic joke.
Oh, & like Miranda J said - enjoy it while you don't have it.
I wanted it sooo bad when I was 8, got it at 9 & I'm well over having it at all - though I'm not looking forward to the other side of that coin.
Just one more thing: When it happens tell your mom & Celebrate - like go get ice cream with her. It's a special time for you, but it's a special time for her too.

Trust me, just because your mom got her period at 12 doesn't mean you will. My mom got hers at 16 so i wasn't expecting mine until i was 16, and guess what? i got it a year earlier and i wasn't really prepared or anything for it. A week before i started mine i started having a brownish discharge and then a week later i got it. I never told my mom, i guess because we don't really have a lot of communication between us, and then one day i came home, and my mom was like "Why didn't you tell me you started your period?" i felt really bad and i think i hurt her feelings. Moms want to be able to talk to you about these kind of things and want to be able to help you. I'm sure she will tell you all the signs and symptoms that your about to start. :)

Usually with the first period you have a discharge - clear for the first day or two - you can also cramp really heavy for a day or so before hand - Your body will let you know when its ready, you will know the signs

You´ll know when you´re going to get it when you start getting pain in your lower back and/or lower abdomen. You won´t necessarily get your period at the same age as your mom did. I got mine when I was 11 and my mom didn´t get hers until she was almost 13.

Just because your mother got her period at 12 doesn't mean that you're going to get yours. Every woman is different.

You'll have some light brownish blood that comes out of your vagina first and then it will start to bleed very heavily for a week or more. You can't miss it, don't worry your body will tell you when you get it.
