In her own quiet way, she defied convention and pursued her dream; she sought to be a poet but not to achieve fame or notoriety. She loved beauty and sought to create it; because she had her own notions of poetry that didn't conform to the tastes of the times, many people felt it wasn't true poetry. She didn't change her style to suit them; only herself.

She was a woman of strong convictions, though popular images would have us see her as frail and timid. I don't think a timid person could have done such robust poetry or argued her points of view as she did.

That, in my view, is what makes her an American hero: the courage of her convictions.

She is a great poet and i say she is because great people never die. She lived a life of a hermit yet she captured intricate details about one's feelings and emotions.

Because she was one of America's most brilliant poets and she accomplished that while battling mental illness. It's that simple.
