On my computer i have a Sony DVD-R/RW burner model DRU-710A. I have burned many DVD-Rs and DVD-RWs with this drive and they all have worked successfully. I just bought a new pack of Sony DVD-Rs with accuCORE. I tried burning one of my movies to it, which I just burned to a DVD-RW, and it went up to the point where there were a couple minutes left in the burn. Then the drive opened before the burn was complete and on-screen it said "Illegal Disc". I thought maybe I needed to format the disc first. When I put the disc into the drive, it can't read it and it says the drive in not accessible and there is an incorrect function. This happens with every disc in the pack that I got. Anyone know what's wrong? And yes, my drive is for DVD-Rs and DVD-RWs not DVD+Rs or DVD+RWs.

If this happens to every disk in the pack it could be one of two things.

1. A bad batch of disks
2. Outdated Drive firmware

I would first update the firmware of the the drive and take it from there. You can find the latest firmware for your drive at the Sony DRU-710A Support Page
http://sony.storagesupport.com/dvdrw/dru710adwn.htm

Your drives firmware contains programing that tells it how to respond to certain types of media. It also contains information about optimal write strategies and so much more.

PS. the Sony 710A is actually a rebadged LiteOn SOHW-1633S
